Richmond is the gateway to Canada from the Asia Pacific, home to the Vancouver International Airport and was a proud co-host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It is part of Metro Vancouver, a world premiere destination. Using an efficient public transit system, downtown Vancouver is twenty minutes away. In the opposite direction, the US – Canada border is thirty minutes by automobile and Seattle is an easy day trip.
Richmond is a safe, clean, and healthy city of 180,000 citizens — a highly livable, cosmopolitan city, with many restaurants, shopping centers and recreational and entertainment facilities. It has a park-like setting with a temperature range of 0˚C to 28˚C. Residents are generally professionals, with an upper middle class lifestyle.
The Richmond International Student Programs has been in operation since 1998. The International Student Program allows overseas students to enter Grades 8 through 12 at secondary schools in Richmond, by paying fees to cover the cost of their education. It gives overseas students the opportunity to study alongside Canadian students in the public education system, to the benefit of both. Currently, our International Students come from many countries in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. We also, under certain conditions, accept elementary school students.
Some high schools offer summer programs for students, so that they can become familiar with Canada before formally applying to study in the country.
There are typically three reasons for seeking an educational experience in Canada: to graduate with a high school diploma from a Canadian school; to obtain fluency in English; and/or to develop a global perspective through contact with Canadian students or other overseas students who come from around the world. Each of these goals can be achieved in Richmond.
Richmond Secondary schools offer a wide range of courses in academic, technical and business fields at different levels of challenge. Many International Students are planning to complete their secondary school education with a view to entering a Canadian university or college.
The length of time required for graduation will depend upon the following factors: 1) the applicant’s assessed English Second Language (ESL) ability level; 2) the applicant’s chosen program of study; 3) the applicant’s ability to meet the graduation requirements. There are counselors available at each school to assist International Students in course planning to meet these graduation requirements and the specific requirements for admission into a college or university program of the student’s choice. Students, who cannot meet these requirements by the time they are 20 years old, may be able to do so at one of the Vancouver area colleges, including Kwantlen Polytechnic University, located in Richmond.
There are three universities and several colleges in Metro Vancouver. The University of British Columbia (UBC), located in Vancouver, is the largest. UBC is ranked 30th out of the world’s best 200 universities. Simon Fraser University (SFU) in neighboring Burnaby also accepts International Students. Within the city of Richmond there are the Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the new Aerospace Technology Campus of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
